Dear Friends

You may, or may not, be aware that Bishop Martin Warner, Bishop of Chichester, has initiated a new award entitled ‘The Order of St Richard’.

It is intended to be an annual award for lay people, which recognizes and celebrates exceptional contributions to a parish and local community, as well as to the diocese. Ten people from each Archdeacomy will be nominated for the award each year, and, in selecting candidates for nomination, clergy and lay sponsors are encouraged to draw upon people from a range of different backgrounds and ages. At the award ceremony, which will take place in the Cathedral each year during the autumn, the Bishop will confer upon those selected the ‘Order of St Richard’. The ceremony for this year, the first since the Order was instigated, will take place on Saturday, 5 October, at 3.00pm. The award will include a certificate signed by the Bishop, a beautifully designed medal to be worn on special occasions, and a lapel pin which can be worn day to day by both men and women.

As you will all know, St Richard is a co-patron saint of our diocese (together with St Wilfrid), so it is particularly appropriate that the Order should come under his aegis, as he is much loved locally, and his life, which is well documented, provides a wonderful exemplar of dedicated Christian ministry.
